UK employment law basics: what small businesses should be aware of

By Umay Yildirim

Employment law can feel overwhelming for small businesses, particularly for founders who are hiring for the first time. The rules often seem complex, and it's not always clear what applies at different stages of a business's growth. At a high level, UK employment law exists to set minimum standards for working relationships and to provide clarity for both employers and employees. Employment law covers the legal framework around how people are engaged at work. This includes how working relationships are defined, what basic rights exist and how issues are handled when things don't go as planned.

Many legal considerations apply from the moment someone is engaged to work, even in very small teams. In small businesses, employment law often intersects closely with day-to-day people management. Informal decisions, unclear expectations or inconsistent treatment can sometimes create issues.
